Translating Evidence into Practice Applied Clinical Implementation in Healthcare

This course offers an in-depth introduction to implementation science with a clear focus on practical application in healthcare settings. Aimed at PhD students working on clinically relevant projects, the course equips participants with foundational knowledge of implementation theories, models, and frameworks, and supports them in applying these concepts to real-world challenges.

The course is structured across three days over a three-month period:

• On Day 1 (31. Aug) participants will be introduced to core theoretical foundations of implementation science, including key theories, models, and frameworks that inform the how to of translating evidence into practice.
• On Day 2 (1. Sep) students will work actively with their own PhD projects, identifying implementation opportunities and developing a tailored implementation strategy based on theory. This hands-on day will involve individual reflection, peer feedback, and group-based exercises.
• Following a three-month period, Day 3 (1. Dec.) will revisit the implementation efforts in the PhD projects with a focus on evaluation, contextual analysis, and planning for sustainment. Rather than expecting full implementation at this stage, the emphasis will be on identifying facilitators and barriers encountered in the early stages of translating evidence into practice. Participants will reflect on their organisational context, stakeholder dynamics, and practical constraints, and explore strategies for progressing implementation efforts beyond the course, including how to adapt, embed, and scale interventions over time.
