Conducting scoping reviews

Aalborg University, Doctoral School in Medicine, Biomedical Science and Technology

The objective of this three-day course is to provide the participants an understanding of why and how to develop a scoping review protocol and conduct a scoping review using the JBI methodology.

Scoping reviews provide an overview of the existing literature within a defined topic of interest. A scoping review can be used to map the key concepts that underpin a field of research, as well as to clarify working definitions, and/or the conceptual boundaries of a topic. The most common reasons for conducting a scoping review are to explore the breadth or extent of the literature, map and summarize the evidence, and inform future research.

The course covers the following areas relevant to developing a scoping review protocol and conducting a scoping review:

  • JBI guidelines and template to developing a scoping review protocol and scoping review
  • Differences and similarities between systematic reviews and scoping reviews
  • Focused question P (Population) C (Concept) C (Context)
  • Search strategy
  • Source of evidence selection
  • Data extraction
  • Analysis and presentation of results
