Functional genomics in translational autoimmunity

The Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg

Autoimmunity occurs when the adaptive immune system causes damage of healthy tissues. Genome-wide studies discovered DNA sequences predisposing to autoimmune diseases, however the causal mechanisms leading to autoimmunity remain unknown. Functional genomics studies the complex relationship between genotype and phenotype of cell affected by risk variants. The course will summarize the knowledge collected about transcriptomic, epigenomic and chromatin structure of immune cells and biological processes leading to autoimmunity. We present a selection of state-of-the-art techniques and propose approaches for analysis, which gives key knowledge required for comprehension and navigation in the growing volume of biomedical genomic information. The course will guide and facilitate further self-directed learning on the topics of individual interest for each student.

The course will be taught online.

The course is open for application on 1 - 21 October 2025. When the application perios is over please contact the course coordinator: Caroline Wasén, caroline.wasen@gu.se
